Beautiful things.

You are looking at the base of a pair of candle-holders, part of a set with a matching serving platter, that belonged to my grandmother. The metal is silver, not golden as the light of the photo makes it appear to be.

I like the curving lines of the inlay, the rounded rosebuds to hold the candles. I like thinking of them in my grandmother’s house in West Seattle many, many years ago.

Beside them, nearly off-frame to the left, is the plate of a pewter set given to us as a wedding present. There’s a cup, large enough, almost, to be called a tankard, with a handle. It rests on the plate. In December the cup is encircled with holly sprigs which come out of one of the Christmas boxes in the garage.

Under them is an embroidered piece of cotton, about the size of a placemat. I like  the skilled cut-out work of the lace at either end.
